Parfaite session photo improvisée, Khop Khun Krap Bangkok !
A oublier

“A slow travel from Europe to Asia to meet those who imagine our new world, leading our ecological and social transition”
Agenda:
Hong Kong interlude
On the road: new step in Thailand
Highlights from Thailand
Project: episode 3 - The Taste of Plants (Madrid, Spain)
Project: eurasian season and next episodes
To watch: Un Monde Nouveau (A New World) by Cyril Dion & Thierry Robert
[If you joined recently] On 20 May 2023, from Barcelona in Spain, I started my slow travel from Europe to Asia, with priority to the train and soft transport as much as possible, to make the adventure spicier and, of course, to lower my carbon impact in order to be more ecologically aligned.
Hong Kong Interlude - Day 139
After Japan, I'm in transit in Hong Kong with two objectives: to renew my Chinese visa but also to visit a good Hong Kong friend Augustine, whom I met during my studies in Shanghai and who I haven't seen since his wedding in 2019. With my best local guide, I took in the spectacular views of the bay from his offices at the IFC (highest building in Hong Kong: 484 meters), discovered new local canteens at Sam Shui Po, attended a local wedding where he officiated, spent some time at the Jazzfest festival in Kowloon and took part in a night-time running.
New visa granted, it's time to be back on the rails with a visit to Guangzhou before heading for Kunming, the capital of China's Yunnan province. This is the starting point for the new 1,400 km Lao-China Railway high-speed line that crosses Laos. This €6 billion project, partly financed by China and a symbol of its ambitions for the new Silk Roads, required the construction of 75 tunnels and 160 bridges. After a short break on the banks of the Mekong in Luang Prabang to enjoy some gorgious sunsets, I crossed the Lao-Thai border before boarding the night train from Nong Khai to Bangkok!
On the Road - Thailand - Day 169
The Ranong Wedding. Since the start of my journey, Thailand has been a target as I aim to arrive in time for the Ranong Wedding, celebrating the marriage of my very good friend Fabien, who lives in Thailand, to his future Thai wife Oh. At the halfway of my road, Thailand will be the scene of celebrations and a nice combo of holidays and reunion with friends.
Sweet. That's undeniably the word to sum up this Thai step between holidays and celebrations in the south of Thailand. On the menu: sweet life at Railay Beach in Krabi, a traditional majestic wedding in Ranong facing Myanmar, snorkeling in the turquoise waters of the Similan Islands and on Koh Khai Nok island, beach break by the Andaman Sea in Khao Lak, a historic interlude at the River Kwai Bridge and rooftop escapes in bustling Bangkok. The common thread is the legendary Thai friendly atmosphere and the pleasure of rediscovering the delicisous flavours of local cuisine. I'm particularly fan of the non-spicy Pad Siew (ผัดซีอิ้ว).
This is the first part of Thailand, as I will come again on my way back. Bangkok occupies a central position in South-East Asia, with access to Laos and China to the north, Cambodia and Vietnam to the east, and Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to the south!
Highlights from Thailand
1- The Ranong Wedding. Attending the wedding of one of your best friends on the other side of the world takes on an even more memorable dimension. At 8:08 (the lucky Thai number), the ceremony got under way, with the presentation of our best wishes to the bride and groom, dressed in their sparkling traditional Thai wedding outfit. The festivities continued smoothly from banquet to dinner on the banks of the Kra Buri river, which forms the border between Thailand and Myanmar.
2- The Similan Islands. Thailand is famous for its paradise islands, but it always manages to surprise you with new gems. Popular but well protected from mass tourism, the Similan Islands can be visited during the day after a long boat trip. One part of the islands remains inaccessible: the Similand Islands National Park, where only scientists are allowed, an oasis of peace in the midst of climate change to allow the ocean and its biodiversity to regenerate.
3- Street festival in Bangkok. In the not-so-confidential district of Khao San Road, I plunged into the vibrant and intrepid Bangkok. Early in the morning, I was lucky enough to witness a festival celebrating the local gods with music, dance, acrobatics and flamboyant colours. Camera in hand, I happily immortalise the protagonists who take pleasure in posing. A perfect unpexpected photo session, Khop Khun Krap Bangkok!
To forget
Near the Thai-Laos border, after my train journey from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, I'm a little distracted. Tired, I climb into the first tuk-tuk without thinking, without really negotiating. After a short journey, I sense something suspicious when my tuk-tuk makes a diversion to pick up a strange “friend” I'd spotted lurking near the ATMs. Without hesitation, I grab my bag from the roof and head back down. Fatigue can play tricks on a solotravel, when vigilance too easily becomes distrust. A good reminder as I’m entering South-East Asia!
EPISODE 3 - The Taste of Plants - Madrid, Spain
The aim of this project is to tell the story of those who are engaged regarding climate emergency and who imagine our new world through a documentary serie of episodes (video and article). It's a source of inspiration and food for thought for this new society we are building.

“Waking up our love to nature to better preserve it”
Spring 2023 in Barcelona, I finish my assignment with my company by training my successor Luis. When I tell him about my project, he quickly thinks of this duo of friends he met at the Faculty of Biology in Madrid for a future episode. A meeting was booked to film at the Codocóncodo art gallery in Madrid, where Dani and Kike were that evening running an educational workshop with their project El Herbario Comestible (The Edible Herbarium).
In Madrid, this duo of passionate biologists share a common taste for wild edible plants. Using art as an excuse - drawing for Dani, cooking for Kike - the two friends passionately pass on a science, botany, and an ecological issue, the preservation of biodiversity, the planetary limit of which has been exceeded. El Herbario Comestible aims to educate people about the role of edible plants and raise awareness of climate change and sustainable development issues through educational workshops, tastings and nature outings.
With this episode 3, it’s a fascinating journey where art and the science of life form a seductive combo to awaken our desire to better preserve nature thanks to the combined talents of Dani & Kike. In 2024, the two friends are proposing a new tour across Spain, go here to find out more!
