A voir : Don’t Look Up de Adam McKay
Enfin, me revoilà.

Cam on Vietnam!

A oublier

“A slow travel from Europe to Asia to meet those who imagine our new world, leading our ecological and social transition”
Agenda:
On the road: new step in Vietnam
Highlights from Vietnam
Episode 8: filming in Hô Chi Minh city
Slow Travel: some resources on train
To watch: Don’t Look Up by Adam McKay
[If you joined recently] On 20 May 2023, from Barcelona in Spain, I started my slow travel from Europe to Asia, with priority to the train and soft transport as much as possible, to make the adventure spicier and, of course, to lower my carbon impact in order to be more ecologically aligned.
On the road - Vietnam - Day 259
In the swirl of Saigon. 12 years after a friendly visit and a great getaway. Finally, I'm back. I'm back in the noise. In a dizzying whirlwind that you are so good at. The swarms of motorbikes buzzing around every hour of the day, at every crossroads, on every street corner. As if to remind the visitor I am, that you are alive and well, Saigon. Barely enough time to savour a first "bun thit nuong cha gio" in a hidden street canteen behind a motorbike park, and it's already time to board for Hanoi and my longest train journey…
![](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/w_720,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F3b716c42-6aca-456b-954a-e5db0fde6f89_1170x1142.jpeg)

The exploration of this country with its elongated S-shaped geography will take place in two sequences. In the north from Hanoi, the capital, between rice fields, mountains and bays. To the south from Saigon, between the Mekong delta and the islands. This north-south division is also reminiscent of the country's history, with the fratricidal conflict of the Vietnam War (1955-1975).

Tasty. Just like its cuisine and coffee, that's the best word to describe the country. In Vietnam, I feel at home from north to south: on two wheels in the rice fields of Mai Chau and the Pu Luong natural reserve, a break on the unmissable Halong Bay and its terrestrial version in Ninh Binh, a gastronomic stopover and museum of the women of Vietnam in Hanoi, the city that honks its horn, under the waters of the imperial city of Hué, last-minute karaoke in the confidential islands of the south off Phú Quôc, filming a local documentary in the Mekong delta, the swirl of Saïgon, not forgetting my longest train (42 hours), and to conclude, a new episode filmed. A “banh cuong” break, followed by a final delicious “ca phe muoi” before saying goodbye, see you again very soon. Cam on Vietnam!

Highlights from Vietnam
1- Xmas break in the confidential islands of the south. I set sail on Christmas Eve. A rough sea for a bumpy crossing on the only authorised route. An unscheduled first stop on the surprising "Lai Son", kingdom of fishing, before reaching my final destination "An Son", the trade winds having calmed down. A welcoming, raw and cinematic Vietnam on a island that looks like Corsica or the end of the world in my native Brittany. The Vietnamese Santa Claus came through!
2- The rice fields of Pu Luong. 140 kms of slalom between cows, buffaloes, chickens, pigs, dogs, trucks, buses, motorbikes, bicycles and potholes. I honked, I took detours. I've crossed suspension bridges, climbed steep slopes, taken dangerous turns and bitten the dust. Before the reward, this extraordinary open-air spectacle with its sublime rice fields. Pu Luong is also home to the White Thai, one of Vietnam's 54 ethnic minorities.
3- Vietnamese coffee. On my first trip to Vietnam, as a great coffee lover, I remembered that first delicious cold coffee in the shade of a small street in Saigon. In Vietnam, coffee is a religion. After all, the country is the world's second largest coffee producer. Although I wasn't particularly taken with the Hanoi egg coffee, I fell in love with the "ca phe muoi", a creamy, salty cold coffee whose original recipe comes from Hué.
To forget
My longest train (42 hours). From Saigon, I embarked for Hanoi for a 35-hour train journey that ended up taking 42 hours because of heavy flooding in the centre of the country, between Hué and Hoi An. During my stay, I learnt that Vietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world regarding climate change. In addition to the long journey, it is one of the least comfortable trains: the sleeping bunks are rudimentary, the restaurant car not the most welcoming and the air conditioning hostile. I'll start developing the plastic bag and tape technique to limit the damage. However, the beauty of the scenery will compensate for this, particularly when travelling along the coast in the centre of the country and enjoying the sunsets over rice fields and buffaloes.
Season 1 - Filming in Hô Chi Minh city
In Vietnam, I don't hesitate to activate my Saigon connections to identify an impact project. Thanks to the help of Linda Mai Phung (episode 1), I was put in touch with Angélique Masse Nguyen, co-founder of the NOI media, to arrange an interview with her associate and co-founder Duong Phan.
Episode 8 on Women Empowerment - Hô Chi Minh, Vietnam
Climate issues are also a question of social justice, with the most vulnerable communities suffering the greatest impacts. As the UN points out, "the climate crisis amplifies gender inequalities, threatening women's livelihoods, health and security in particular". Through into the good, I wanted to highlight these issues of social transformation. In Vietnam, this took concrete form with the theme of "Women Empowerment".
Since 2021, the NOI team based in Ho Chi Minh, the economic capital of Vietnam, has been developing a digital platform for Vietnamese women aged between 18 and 40 to promote women's empowerment and contribute to a more inclusive society. NOI is an online community offering a space for sharing experiences and access to vital information and educational resources on health, finance, personal development and careers, to better meet the aspirations of women in Vietnam.

Some Slow Travel resources on Train
This newsletter is an opportunity to talk about new ways of thinking about slow travel and to share valuable resources. On this trip, I opted largely for the train, a low-carbon* form of transport that I love and that offers many advantages over the road.
Discover stunning landscapes through your window
Crossing new countries you wouldn't see by plane
Meeting people, both travellers and locals
Enjoy the best office in the world for working or reading
Being able to wander on journeys where time stands still
Sharing a meal, a tea or even a local vodka with your cabin mates
Being rewarded on arrival at each train station by starting a new journey step
*A TGV (high-speed train in France) passenger emits 56 times less carbon than a plane passenger (source: SNCF Open Data)
Here are a few recommended resources and tools to inspire your future travels in France, Europe and elsewhere:

Released in 2021 on Netflix, the film Don’t Look Up directed by Adam McKay is a powerful allegory of the climate crisis and a satire of the climatospeticism facing scientists. The cast features Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as the main characters, two scientists who are trying to warn of the imminent fall of a comet that will ravage the Earth, and who are up against political and media denial. Above all, Don't Look Up is a reminder of the limits of current media coverage regarding climate change.
Thanks for reading and see you soon!
